Jordan and Plunkett out of series

Chris Jordan and Liam Plunkett have been ruled out of the remainder of the one-day series against New Zealand. Jordan suffered a side strain during his ninth over at The Oval while it emerged late on Saturday that Plunkett had picked up a thigh injury.

Somerset allrounder Craig Overton had already been called up as cover for the third ODI at the Ageas Bowl and has now been made a full part of the squad. A decision on a replacement for Plunkett will be taken in the next 24 hours.

Jordan was unable to complete his ten-over allocation at The Oval after feeling discomfort and leaving the pitch, although he did return to bat as England tried desperately to get over the line. He suffered a painful time with the ball even before the injury, taking 1 for 97 from nine overs, equalling the most expensive spell by an England bowler in ODIs.

Plunkett took 1 for 71 at The Oval to follow none for 37 in the opening match at Edgbaston although had impressed with the bat making 44 off 30 balls in England's attempt to chase 399 two days ago

An ECB statement said: "Both players will now undergo a rehabilitation programme and their response to treatment over the coming days will determine the timescale for a return to competitive cricket."

Overton has not been in an England squad before, although he was thought to be close to the youthful group taken to Ireland last month. His twin brother Jamie was called up by England for the ODIs against Australia in 2013 but did not play a game.

Craig Overton has taken 20 wickets at 18.05 in four Championship matches this year, following on from an impressive first-class season with bat and ball in 2014. His limited-overs returns are not quite at the same level, with 14 wickets from 25 List A and T20 appearances.

England already have Mark Wood and David Willey as bowling options in the squad. Wood has already impressed with his pace during the Tests against New Zealand while Willey, who made his debut against Ireland, provides a left-arm option as well as handy ability with the bat.
