Papua New Guinea Men's Cricket Team History
Cricket was introduced to the country in the late 19th century by Christian missionaries, and played widely, if loosely, locally. The first recorded match by a representative Papua New Guinea team was played in 1972, against a touring Australia XI at Amini Park in Port Moresby, the country's capital. A year later PNG were formally admitted as an Associate member of the ICC.
A dominant force in the East Asia-Pacific region, especially in the shortest format, they gained ODI status - and by extension T20I status - at the 2014 World Cup Qualifier in New Zealand. Later that year, they became the first team to win their first two one-day internationals after gaining status. They were briefly relegated in 2018 after a defeat to Nepal, but reclaimed ODI status after a top-four finish in the 2019 ICC World Cricket League Division Two.
Having been a part of every World Cup qualifier since 2013, PNG finished at the top in 2019, which earned them a place at the T20 World Cup for the first time, in 2021, though they bowed out winless after the first round.
They missed out on qualification in 2022, but topped the table in the 2024 East Asia-Pacific region qualifiers, making it to their second T20 World Cup in 2024.
