2nd Test: New Zealand v India at Hamilton, 19-23 Dec 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Good morning from WestPac Park in Hamilton, where the 2nd test is
due to get under way. Unfortunately it wont be getting under way
        on time.
Several days of soggy weather have left the surface very damp, the
ground staff having had no opportunity to make repairs
There are a couple of areas of concern, mostly where the covers
haven't protected things - near the boundary
The current situation is that the ground staff haven't handed over
the ground to the umpires, and from looking at the ground I would
say there will be no play until at least after lunch, possibly
        even tea.
Weather conditions are quite nice, blue skies, sparse light clouds,
        and warm temperatures.
Update - 10:30am (21:30GMT) - Still no prospect of immediate play,
and the word we have is that there will definately be no play
        until after lunch.
There will be an inspection at 2:00pm (01:00GMT)
Update - 1:30pm (00:30GMT) - More cloud cover here at the moment,
and in fact there is a light cover on the pitch, in case it comes
to something. Otherwise the only action is the NZ team getting a
        group photograph.
Update - 2:00pm (01:00GMT) - Well the umpires were due to have a
look at things about now, but that seems to be delayed. There is a
small rain shower crossing the ground at the moment, which
        complicates proceedings a tad.
       Update - 2:30pm (01:30GMT) - THe umpires areout inspecting
conditions, but more concerning is a big, dark, threatening rain
cloud which seems to be approaching.
Update - 2:40pm - Oh dear, things seem to be taking a turn for the
worse. YThe rain cloud has gone from threatening to downright
menacing - complete with thunder and lightening. Nothing has
reached here yet, but ground staff are acting as if it wont be t
Update - 2:50pm (01:50GMT) - And sadly the umpires have just
announced that play has been abandoned for the day.
With the drops of rain not too far away, the decision has been that
there will be no chance that the outfield will get to the required
        state.
So tommorrow play (hopefully) will begin early in an attempt to
recover lost time, and finish later. 105 overs will be played,
        beginning at 10:30am (21:30GMT)
It's been a day of waiting, with little reward. Particularly for
the spectators who filed in early on under bright blue skies.
Should we be able to get the next four days without interruption,
we will only lose 30 overs from the match. However, currently
there is a stormcloud dumping it's contents on Hamilton making the
        chances of that, slim.
Join us at 10:30am (21:30GMT) tomorrow, to see if we have more play
        than today.
Good morning from Hamilton as we attempt to get underway in this
2nd National Bank Test Match. Unfortunately the news isn't that
        great.

Match State: Delay - Day 2 - Damp Outfield

Good morning from Hamilton as we attempt to get underway in this
2nd National Bank Test Match. Unfortunately the news isn't that
        great.
Despite good weather again this morning, there was a fair amount of
rain last night, and much of the drying that took place yesterday
        has been lost.
This morning we have the interesting event of a helicopter hovering
over the ground in an attempt to speed the drying of the ground.
It has been moving around 5 metres above all the spots of concern,
guided by the ground staff, for at least 30 minutes this morning,
and showing no sign of letting up.
The news from the umpires isn't as exciting - Play will not begin
on time, and they will inspect the conditions at 11:30 (22:30GMT)
A casual glance suggests that things are more promising than
yesterday, with no actual pools of water on the ground. The earth
is very damp, and a start time would seem to be unlikely before
        about 2:00pm (01:00GMT)
Update - Now they seem to have become even more serious about the
helicopter. It is now hovering just 1m off the surface. Quite
        impressive work by the pilot.
Update 10:45am -The Helicopter has left the location! After over an
hour of hovering, it suddenly lifted straight up and left.
Update 11:50am (22:50GMT) - The umpires have spent the last 15
minutes inspecting the ground, and have told us that they will
look again after lunch. Progress is being made and it looks
promising for a start at some stage soon after that.
The next inspection will be at 1:40pm (00:40GMT) which would make
the earliest start time about 2:10pm (1:10GMT)
Update 1:50pm (00:50GMT) - The umpires have had a good look around,
and have decided that at 3:00pm (02:00GMT) the captains will meet
        in the middle.
It is understood that if they agree to play, the match could start.
Indications are that it's more likely to be about 4:00pm
        (03:00GMT) before play starts.
Update 3:00pm (02:00) - the captains and umpires are meeting, and
after a fair amount of head nodding, shaking, arm waving and
discussion, there seems to be some sort of agreement. Maybe a
        start after tea.
And the official word has come through - Play will begin at 4:30pm,
with 38 overs to be played today
NZ have won tthe toss and (unsurprisingly) have chosen to bowl
        first
New Zealand have chosen to go into the match with the same team as
in Wellington, and India have brought in Tinu Yohannan for Agarkar
Not a particularly hard decision to bowl first on a pitch that,
despite nearly 2 days of sun on it, looks pretty green
India will be desperate to not lose early wickets, and build a big
enough score to enable Harbijan to put pressure on the NZ order
Conditions are superb now here, light clouds hanging around, but
it's very warm and there's a light breeze
Bond and Tuffey will be looking forward to bowling on this pitch.
Tuffey in particular has found it a happy hunting ground - his
best first class figures were recordrd here - 7 wickets for 12
        runs.
Umpires coming out now, de Silva taking the southern (city) end
Bond will open the bowling from the Northern (Members) end
Bangar to take the first ball
0.1 Bond to Bangar, one run, into the hips of Bangar who turns it down
        to fine leg
0.2 Bond to Sehwag, no run, on the back foot in defence, pushing it
back up the off side of the pitch
0.3 Bond to Sehwag, no run, fuller ball, again defended off the back
foot, this time dropping it to the leg side of the pitch
3 slips, 2 gullys, point, mid off, short leg and fine leg
0.4 Bond to Sehwag, no run, appeal for lbw as Bond beats the inside
edge. It bounces way too high and umpire Harper has no hesitation
        in walking away
0.5 Bond to Sehwag, no run, left well alone, lifting the bat high above
a ball bouncing through to Hart outside the off stump
0.6 Bond to Sehwag, no run, good ball, bouncing on Sehwag, who tries
desperately to drop his hands under it. It bounces over his gloves

4.2 Bond to Sehwag, no run, lifting the bat high above it, bouncing
lazily though. Not much bounce there
4.3 Bond to Sehwag, no run, well away from off stump, and Sehwag has no
        hesitation in leaving it
4.4 Bond to Sehwag, no run, full ball, Sehwag chops down at it, missing

Thats the end of the day, we will return tomorrow to see if India
        can reach 100
New Zealand will be pleased to have won the toss, having put India
in on a pitch that was "doing a bit"
Fleming comments that the pitch is a little dissappointing. Even
so, some of the Indian shot options left a little to be desired,
particularly Ganguly who seemed to be giving slip catching
        practice

Match State: Stumps - Day 2

On another day Bonds 3-33 would be cause for comment, but the
effort of Tuffey is what will be remembered, at one stage having
bowled 6 overs without conceeding a run.
After 1 2/3 days of waiting the spectators finally got some action,
and despite all the lost time, we are well situated to get a
result in this match. If the pitch doesn't flatten out markedly,
we may not need the last day!
The match is scheduled to resume at 10:30am (21:30GMT) tomorrow,
weather permitting we will have 105 overs of action.
Good morning on what is a bright, fine and sunny Hamilton morning.
There are high clouds around, but the blue skies are shining
        through and it's very warm

Match State: Stumps - Day 3

The end of an astonishing day's play here in Hamilton, with 22
wickets falling. We have seen all four innings (if not all of
them) of the test, and it's probably safe to say there will be a
        result tomorrow
Tuffey with 8-53 for the match, is a stand out, but all the bowlers
looked good on a pitch where the highest score of the batsmen is
        39
Good morning from Hamilton. Slightly overcast skies here for the
4th day of this test, but I dont think that we will have a problem
with the amount of time left in the game
15.1 Yohannan to Vincent, no run, shortish, but well outside the off

15.2 Yohannan to Vincent, no run, straighter ball, defended off the pads

15.3 Yohannan to Vincent, two runs, driven straight, noce shot back past

15.4 Yohannan to Vincent, no run, lifting the bat high in the air above

Still plenty of bounce in the pitch, if a little uneven
15.5 Yohannan to Vincent, no run, short ball, bouncing up near Vincent's

       oh dear
54.1 Nehra to Hart, FOUR, edged! to the leg side and he takes a step out
of his ground. The throw comes in and he would've been out! but it
missed and the ball races past the backup fielder and goes to the
        rope. Worth the shot
54.2 Nehra to Hart, no run, Beaten! Appeal! Great ball induces a shot
from Hart and the Indians appeal wholeheartedly, but the bowler
        looked to join in late
There was a bat pad noise
54.3 Nehra to Hart, no run, left alone, on the front foot choosing to
keep the bat well out of the way this time
54.4 Nehra to Hart, no run, again choosing to leave it off the front
        foot
54.5 Nehra to Hart, no run, on the back foot to a shorter one angled in
at him, defending down to the leg side and quickly refusing the
        single
54.6 Nehra to Hart, no run, left alone, again on the front foot

End of over 55 (4 runs) New Zealand 153/6 (7 more runs req)
A Nehra 16-4-31-3 - Members End
JDP Oram 23* (37b 3x4) RG Hart 7* (16b 1x4)

55.1 Harbhajan Singh to Oram, no run, dipping ball, Oram stretches
        forward to defend
55.2 Harbhajan Singh to Oram, two runs, clipped throught he leg side,
nicely placed and timed, not willing to chance the 3rd run
55.3 Harbhajan Singh to Oram, one run, clippedup the leg side off the
        back foot
55.4 Harbhajan Singh to Hart, no run, good ball has Hart a little edgy
in his defence, watching it onto the bat
55.5 Harbhajan Singh to Hart, no run, forward in defence, it runs off
        the outside edge behind point
55.6 Harbhajan Singh to Hart, one run, inside edge runs to square leg,
they take the single as it runs past the inner field

End of over 56 (4 runs) New Zealand 157/6 (3 more runs req)
Harbhajan Singh 11-0-39-1 - City End
RG Hart 8* (19b 1x4) JDP Oram 26* (40b 3x4)

Just 3 runs to get now
56.1 Nehra to Hart, two runs, fullish ball, clipped through the leg side
off the pads, running hard for the 2nd
56.2 Nehra to Hart, one run, worked off the hip behind square, the local
boy gets a huge cheer as NZ win the test match
This is the 10th time that a test has been won, without a 50 being
        scored in the match
An astonishing match, just under 2 days of play in the end, but
still plenty of action - including the 22 wickets falling
        yesterday
The pitch will be looked at, but to be honest some of the batting
        was awful
NZ did well to struggle through in the end
The pitch seems to have flattened out a little, but there was still
plenty of balls going past edges this afternoon. India will rue
not being able to scrape together 50 more runs yesterday
afternoon, especially when Tendulkar and Dravid were going well
New Zealand win the series 2 - 0, and India will be a little
dissappointed with their efforts. Conditions certainly haven't
been in their favour, but coming here for the first time with John
Wright in charge, they will have hoped for more.
New Zealand retain their position at number 3 on the ICC test
        championship table
The first one day international match will be held on boxing day,
26 December at Eden Park, Auckland
