Good afternoon from Eden Park, where conditions are looking
surprisingly good, given the amount of rain we have had in the
last couple of days.
Sunshone and a strong wind have combined to dry out the ground
quickly, and preperations are under way for a start on time. Given
the way things have worked at Eden Park in the past, however,
nothing would be surprising.
In fact the word has just come through - Start time is 2:15pm (15
min late), 50 overs each, and a shortened 30 min break between
innings.
Currently we have bright sunshine, and a decent breeze, although
showers are forcast for later in the day
The toss has been won by India, and unsurprisingly have chosen to
bowl first. The rain has given the pitch little chance to see any
sun and dry out, and looks a little green from this distance
The ground is looking amazingly good, quite astonishing given the
rain we have had. We were half expecting the match to be called
off today and to come back tomorrow.
New Zealand have left Vettori out of the squad, while India have
gone the other direction and included 2 spinners, at the expense
of Mongia
In fact we just have another update, and it seems India have made a
few changes, from what we were told ealier on
We are playing on a portable pitch, but not the same one that was
used for the 1st ODI. It looks a little green, having been under
shelter for the last 3 days, but hopefully not as awkward to bat
on as that day.
Not a huge crowd in at the moment - a reflection of the state of
the series, and the parhaps the lack of big scores in previous
games, along with the fact that it's the first fine day in about 4
days, so the beach will also be an attraction.

Both teams made harder work of it than they should have, New

India looked to be cruising at 142/1, but some excellent bowling
from Mills and Styris brought the run rate down. THen India
started to lose wickets, and all of a sudden we had a contest on
our hands
Special mention to the outstanding innings of Sehwag, easily the
best of the match, and a contender for the innings of the series
How India managed to make such hard work of it, needing 18 off 41
balls, still has to be answered
This has probably been the match of the series so far, in terms of
a contest and some big hitting. Whether it should have been this
close is up for discussion of course.
