4th ODI: New Zealand v India at Queenstown, 4 Jan 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 12pm local time (2300 GMT)

welcome to the John Davies Oval at the Queenstown Events Centre
complex where New Zealand are set to take on India in the fourth
        National Bank Series One-Day International
it's the maiden One-Day International to be held at this venue, and
an incredible venue it is too - more for what surrounds it than
the ground itself (though it certainly has its own charm!)
surrounded by mountains, with the Remarkables range at one end, it
is a quite unique spectacle here, to rival that of the likes of
Newlands in Cape Town with Table Mountain in the backdrop
the weather hasn't quite come to the party, with a fair amount of
cloud hanging about, each with varying degrees of danger lurking
in them, but there's no rain to speak of at the moment, lets hope
it remains that way - the forecast is marginal, but blue
sky can be seen creeping along in the far off distance
the pitch has been kept much drier ahead of this match than others
around the country, risky, but in the hope that it'll produce a
long sought-after belter with plenty of runs on offer
the outfield is in wonderful condition, looks quick, though it was
reasonably lush yesterday, but has no doubt received another
clipping off the top since then
New Zealand have brought back Andre Adams and Scott Styris into the
team, while the recalled Chris Harris will be 12th man today, with
Lou Vincent and Paul Hitchcock dropping out of the squad to make
way for them (and Michael Mason from the 12th man role)
for India, there are a number of changes also, but alas still no
        Sachin Tendulkar
Dinesh Mongia, fresh from arriving in the country, is straight into
the playing XI at VVS Laxman's expense - not unexpected,
considering the former took the latter's World Cup berth and will
need all the practice he can get
Parthiv Patel gets to make his ODI debut at last, with Dravid
relinquishing the gloves to him so he can play as a batsman only
Sanjay Bangar and Harbhajan Singh are also both being rested, with
Ashish Nehra returning, to form part of a pace-only attack for
        India today
India are 3-0 down in the 7-match series, so this game is do or die
        - lose this one and the series is gone, one wonders whether the
motivation is there today, to break this trot of 5 losses in a row
to New Zealand on tour (not including the Max loss!)
the players make their way out on to the field in front of a packed
ground, and there's still huge queues waiting outside
it'll be Virender Sehwag to open the batting with Rahul Dravid
today, Ganguly back down the order it seems
it'll be Daryl Tuffey to bowl the first over of the day
three slips, third man, gully, point, mid off, mid on and long leg
        in place
0.1 Tuffey to Sehwag, wide: no run, starts off with a wide, fullish
ball a bit too wide outside off stump, leaves alone to the keeper
0.1 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, similar again but this time much
straighter outside off stump, shoulders arms through to the keeper
0.2 Tuffey to Sehwag, two runs, full on the legs, easily picked off
through backward square leg, Mills around in the deep from finer
to field, easy two on offer to get off the mark
0.3 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, shortish lifting ball outside off stump,
shoulders arms through to the keeper
0.4 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, plays and misses! good length ball and
Sehwag chases after it outside off stump, drifting wider from him,
        through to the keeper
0.5 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, beaten! much straighter on the same
length outside off stump, has Sehwag thrusting forward in defence
and it slides just past the outside edge through to keeper
        McCullum
0.6 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, and again! very similar delivery, fine
stuff from Tuffey, has Sehwag well beaten outside off stump
        through to the keeper

End of over 1 (3 runs) India 3/0 (RR: 3.00)
DR Tuffey 1-0-3-0 (1w) - Remarkables End
R Dravid 0* (0b) V Sehwag 2* (6b)

it'll be Kyle Mills to open the bowling from the Coronet Peak End
same field set, with three slips, third man, gully, point, mid off,
mid on and long leg in place
1.1 Mills to Dravid, no run, shortish lifting ball on off stump, jumps
back in the crease to defend, playing it straight down to Adams at
        mid on
1.2 Mills to Dravid, (noball) no run, oversteps, fair length ball
drifting wide outside off stump, shoulders arms to leave alone to
        the keeper
1.2 Mills to Dravid, no run, full and straight, strongly drives
straight back down the pitch but Mills does well to get a hand on
it low down on his follow through, slows it up for McMillan to
        tidy up from mid off
1.3 Mills to Dravid, no run, widish ball angling away outside off
stump, leans forward but that's all he does, content to leave
        alone to the keeper
1.4 Mills to Dravid, no run, shorter rising ball just outside off
stump, watchfully stands back in the crease, leaving alone to the
        keeper
1.5 Mills to Dravid, no run, fuller ball a little wider outside off
stump, again happy to leave alone to the keeper
1.6 Mills to Dravid, no run, shortish lifting ball outside off stump,
raises the arms up high to leave alone to the keeper once more

End of over 2 (1 run) India 4/0 (RR: 2.00)
KD Mills 1-0-1-0 (1nb) - Coronet Peak End
V Sehwag 2* (6b) R Dravid 0* (7b)

2.1 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, fullish ball drifting away just down the
leg side, Sehwag tries to catch up with it but misses, through to
the keeper as it doesn't pass through too wide of leg stump
2.2 Tuffey to Sehwag, one run, fullish, straight ball, turned off the
legs away out to Mills at long leg for a leisurely single
the crowd is rather quiet here so far, may be the first ODI some of
them have witnessed, not generating any real excitement, feels
more like a village cricket match!
2.3 Tuffey to Dravid, one run, fullish ball just outside off stump,
taps it down in close on the off side, smart quick single taken
with the shot, Tuffey unable to scoot through and underarm it at
        the stumps cleanly
2.4 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, good back of a length ball outside off
stump, swish and a miss from Sehwag, beaten by the bounce, through
        to the keeper
2.5 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, good length ball outside off stump,
induces an edge from Sehwag, but plays with soft hands, bounces
down well short of Styris at third slip who takes on the bounce
2.6 Tuffey to Sehwag, wide: no run, short and wide, angling away well
down the leg side, Sehwag can't catch up to that one, through to
        the keeper
2.6 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, gets his line right this time, back of a
length outside off stump, withdraws his bat inside the line to
        leave to the keeper

End of over 3 (3 runs) India 7/0 (RR: 2.33)
DR Tuffey 2-0-6-0 (2w) - Remarkables End
R Dravid 1* (8b) V Sehwag 3* (11b)

3.1 Mills to Dravid, no run, shortish ball outside off stump, shoulders
        arms through to the keeper
3.2 Mills to Dravid, three runs, shot! lifting ball outside off stump,
Dravid stands tall and punches it down through the covers, a long
chase for Sinclair from point, just overhauls it inside the rope,
fires it from side on to the bowler's end, wasn't far off a direct
        hit with Dravid
just making his ground, might have been a little tight!
3.3 Mills to Sehwag, no run, props forward in defence to a good length
ball outside off stump, angling into him, takes the inside edge
and drops into the front pad before bouncing away, a little bit of
a dangerous gap there in defence
3.4 Mills to Sehwag, (noball) one run, oversteps, fair length ball
outside off stump, cuts hard into the ground, bounces up and over
Oram in the gully (no mean feat - he's 6'6"!), away to Vettori at
        third man
3.4 Mills to Dravid, no run, oooh! huge appeal for lbw from the New
Zealanders, rather prolonged too, particularly from Mills who
jumps all the way down the pitch pleading to umpire Cowie, seamed
back in to rap the knee roll, but was doing too much
3.5 Mills to Dravid, no run, fair length ball just outside off stump,
half forward to tap it into the ground, away towards point in
        defence
3.6 Mills to Dravid, no run, fair length ball outside off stump, jumps
back in his crease to leave alone to the keeper

End of over 4 (5 runs) India 12/0 (RR: 3.00)
KD Mills 2-0-6-0 (2nb) - Coronet Peak End
V Sehwag 4* (13b) R Dravid 4* (13b)

4.1 Tuffey to Sehwag, FOUR, shot! pure class, overpitched outside off
stump and Sehwag dispatches it, cracking drive through vacant
        extra cover, a collection job
4.2 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, fullish ball on off stump, gets in behind
it, solidly defending with a straight bat up to McMillan at mid
        off
4.3 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, short lifting straight ball, taken on the
body as he looks to force it down the ground
4.4 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, short lifting ball on off stump, gets in
behind it, firmly defending straight up to McMillan at mid off
4.5 Tuffey to Sehwag, one run, full on the legs, strongly clipped away
through backward square leg, a fine sliding save by Mills in the
        deep cuts off a boundary
4.6 Tuffey to Dravid, no run, full down the leg side, brushes the leg
as it goes through to McCullum who makes a fine diving take to his
        left

End of over 5 (5 runs) India 17/0 (RR: 3.40)
DR Tuffey 3-0-11-0 (2w) - Remarkables End
V Sehwag 9* (18b 1x4) R Dravid 4* (14b)

5.1 Mills to Sehwag, no run, sharp rising ball off a back of a length
outside off stump, swish and a miss through to the keeper
5.2 Mills to Sehwag, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump, chopped
down into the gully in defence
5.3 Mills to Sehwag, no run, similar again, this time defends it away
        towards Sinclair at point
5.4 Mills to Sehwag, no run, and once again, steering it off the edge
straight down to Oram at gully on the bounce
5.5 Mills to Sehwag, no run, oooh! Sehwag goes for a big shot but it
doesn't come off, backs well outside leg stump to a fullish ball
angling in on off stump, swish and a miss, just passes over the
        top of off stump
5.6 Mills to Sehwag, no run, fullish ball on off stump, firmly strokes
it into the covers in defence

End of over 6 (maiden) India 17/0 (RR: 2.83)
KD Mills 3-1-6-0 (2nb) - Coronet Peak End
R Dravid 4* (14b) V Sehwag 9* (24b 1x4)

6.1 Tuffey to Dravid, two runs, fielding! short lifting straight ball,
powerfully pulled down through backward square leg, great diving
stop made by Mills to just keep it inside the boundary and save
        two runs
6.2 Tuffey to Dravid, no run, good sharp rising ball just outside off
stump and leaving Dravid, withdraws the bat from the line rather
        late
6.3 Tuffey to Dravid, no run, short rising ball on off stump, goes
back, steering it firmly down to Sinclair at point
6.4 Tuffey to Dravid, one run, full on the legs, firmly clipped away
along the ground straight out to Mills at deep backward square leg
6.5 Tuffey to Sehwag, FOUR, shot! a bit wide outside off stump and
Sehwag hammers it, carving it away through cover point, wide of
Sinclair, whose job is simply to collect it
6.6 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, great response! perfect length ball just
a fraction outside off stump, straightens off the seam from the
initial angle in, Sehwag presents the full face of the bat but is
well beaten, passes over off stump to the keeper

End of over 7 (7 runs) India 24/0 (RR: 3.43)
DR Tuffey 4-0-18-0 (2w) - Remarkables End
R Dravid 7* (18b) V Sehwag 13* (26b 2x4)

7.1 Mills to Dravid, no run, shortish ball with some width outside off
stump, swish and a miss, reaching well away from his body for it,
through to the keeper to Mills' anguish as there's no nick on it
7.2 Mills to Dravid, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, leans
forward, firmly defending into the covers
7.3 Mills to Dravid, (noball) no run, oversteps, fullish ball outside
off stump, pushes it up towards mid off
7.3 Mills to Dravid, no run, shorter ball outside off stump, hangs the
bat back out of the way to leave it alone to the keeper
7.4 Mills to Dravid, one run, tight shortish ball on off stump, chops
it down into the ground in close on the off side, sharp single
taken very well as the field are slow to react, taken with ease in
        the end
7.5 Mills to Sehwag, no run, shortish lifting ball on off stump, forced
off the back foot straight up to McMillan at mid off
7.6 Mills to Sehwag, no run, wider, fuller ball outside off stump,
hangs the bat back out of the way to leave to the keeper

End of over 8 (2 runs) India 26/0 (RR: 3.25)
KD Mills 4-1-8-0 (3nb) - Coronet Peak End
R Dravid 8* (23b) V Sehwag 13* (28b 2x4)

Jacob Oram on to bowl, replacing Tuffey at the Remarkables End
8.1 Oram to Dravid, no run, full and straight on off stump, props
forward, watchfully defending back to the bowler
8.2 Oram to Dravid, one run, similar again, this time Dravid smartly
taps it down in close on the off side and they scoot through for
another quick single, Sinclair in from point to field, underarms
at the bowler's end and misses, was well home in any case
8.3 Oram to Sehwag, no run, tight ball on off stump, forced from the
crease just forward of square on the off side, Dravid looks for a
single but holds his ground as Sinclair is sharp to field it and
threatens to throw down the stumps
8.4 Oram to Sehwag, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, steers it
away just behind point this time, it's Styris diving across from
gully who fields very well to his right, flinging it back from on
the turf to McCullum who whips off the bails for show only, only
        brief looks
for a run there by the Indian openers
8.5 Oram to Sehwag, no run, a fraction shorter outside off stump,
Sehwag unfurls a cracking cut into the ground, but can't get it
sufficiently forward of Sinclair at point
8.6 Oram to Sehwag, FOUR, thwack! gets the end result he wanted this
time, too short and wide outside off stump, slashed away high and
wide of gully, rockets to the boundary with Adams no hope to cut
        it off from third man

End of over 9 (5 runs) India 31/0 (RR: 3.44)
JDP Oram 1-0-5-0 - Remarkables End
R Dravid 9* (25b) V Sehwag 17* (32b 3x4)

this is easily India's best opening stand of the ODI series, and
the pair of them are looking pretty confident at the moment, very
        comfortable and building
9.1 Mills to Dravid, one run, tight shortish ball just outside off
stump, dabs it down into the gully and they grab a tight single,
the underarm throw at the stumps from Oram just misses, was rather
        tight had it hit
9.2 Mills to Sehwag, no run, tight fullish ball on off stump,
watchfully in behind it, steering it away to point in defence
9.3 Mills to Sehwag, no run, shorter ball outside off stump, Sehwag is
quick to go back and play a consummate back cut, but can't beat a
very sharp stop by Oram falling to his left at gully on the bounce
9.4 Mills to Sehwag, two runs, shorter again outside off stump and
Sehwag looks to pull but is a bit hurried on it, ends up dragging
it straight down the ground between bowler and Adams at mid on,
time for a couple as Adams gives chase
9.5 Mills to Sehwag, FOUR, shot! a bit short outside off stump once
more and Sehwag more orthodoxly cuts it away through cover point,
doesn't bother to run for that, getting into full swing now
9.6 Mills to Sehwag, no run, better length outside off stump,
watchfully looks to defend it before whipping the bat out of the
road to leave to the keeper

End of over 10 (7 runs) India 38/0 (RR: 3.80)
KD Mills 5-1-15-0 (3nb) - Coronet Peak End
R Dravid 10* (26b) V Sehwag 23* (37b 4x4)

10.1 Oram to Dravid, no run, fullish, straight ball, squeezes it up the
ground from the legs, straight to Vettori at mid on
10.2 Oram to Dravid, no run, plays and misses! fullish ball invites the
drive, but as far as Dravid can reach, it's not far enough,
playing somewhat away from his body as there was width to the
        delivery, through to the keeper
10.3 Oram to Dravid, no run, good short lifting ball just outside off
stump, leaves Dravid who has a bit of a fish at it before
withdrawing the bat inside the line too late
10.4 Oram to Dravid, no run, tight short lifting ball on off stump,
chops it down into the gully where Styris fields on the bounce
10.5 Oram to Dravid, no run, good length lifting ball just outside off
stump, Dravid thrusts forward at it in defence, seams right back
in, clipping the top of the pad and going through to the keeper,
unconvincing appeal for caught behind turned down by umpire de
        Silva
10.6 Oram to Dravid, no run, tight ball on off stump, steers it down
into the gully where Styris fields, a maiden over

End of over 11 (maiden) India 38/0 (RR: 3.45)
JDP Oram 2-1-5-0 - Remarkables End
V Sehwag 23* (37b 4x4) R Dravid 10* (32b)

Andre Adams on to bowl, replacing Mills at the Coronet Peak End
11.1 Adams to Sehwag, no run, shortish ball outside off stump, cuts down
into the ground, straight to Styris almost on the 45 at short
third man, a little squarer though
Fleming has posted himself at a very short backward point,
attacking Sehwag with a deliberate ploy as he looks to play his
        favoured cut strokes
11.2 Adams to Sehwag, OUT: and it partly works! good sharp rising ball
outside off stump, goes after it but only manages a thick edge
through to Astle at slip, jumps up to take it very smartly

       India 38/1, Partnership of 38
       V Sehwag c Astle b Adams 23 (39b 4x4 0x6)
       R Dravid 10* (32b) AR Adams 0.2-0-0-1

       Dinesh Mongia the new batsman
11.3 Adams to Mongia, wide: no run, short rising ball outside off stump,
but too wide, left alone to the keeper
11.3 Adams to Mongia, one run, shortish ball outside off stump, guides
it away down to Vettori at third man
11.4 Adams to Dravid, FOUR, too short and easily dispatched by Dravid,
pulls through vacant square leg, huge open spaces on the leg side
so that's a cardinal sin to bowl there, bread and butter for
        Dravid
11.5 Adams to Dravid, no run, short lifting ball outside off stump,
        leaves alone to the keeper
11.6 Adams to Dravid, one run, another rather short, straight ball,
pulls powerfully again, but drags it finer, down to Oram at long
        leg on the bounce

End of over 12 (7 runs) India 45/1 (RR: 3.75)

R Dravid 15* (35b 1x4) D Mongia 1* (1b)

12.1 Oram to Dravid, no run, fullish ball on off stump, squeezes it out
back down the pitch to the bowler
a helicopter hovers above the ground, with TV cameramen filming
from it, making a fairly noisy distraction for the crowd, who are
pretty quiet most of the time!
12.2 Oram to Dravid, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump, defends
from the crease, playing up towards mid off
12.3 Oram to Dravid, no run, similar again, a touch fuller, Dravid
watchfully defending from the crease, plays with a straight bat up
        to mid off
12.4 Oram to Dravid, no run, shortish lifting straight ball, a little
extra effort, hurries up Dravid, jabs it down to Vettori at mid on
        in defence
12.5 Oram to Dravid, wide: no run, fantastic take! short wayward ball
down the leg side, swings away very late, McCullum acrobatically
leaps to his left and gloves it cleanly, had 5 wides written all
        over it
12.5 Oram to Dravid, two runs, shortish ball sits up outside off stump,
powerfully cuts out through cover point, two men give chase as it
pulls up just inside the boundary, not perfectly timed, indecision
over a third run leads them to stay at home
12.6 Oram to Dravid, no run, shortish, straight ball on off stump, hops
on the crease to tuck it down to square leg in defence

End of over 13 (3 runs) India 48/1 (RR: 3.69)

D Mongia 1* (1b) R Dravid 17* (41b 1x4)

13.1 Adams to Mongia, wide: no run, short and wide outside off stump,
leaves it well alone to the keeper to pick up a free run
13.1 Adams to Mongia, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump, gets
right in behind it, solidly defending up towards Tuffey at mid off
13.2 Adams to Mongia, one run, full just outside off stump, squirts a
thick outside edge along the ground to Oram at third man
13.3 Adams to Dravid, no run, shortish ball, sits up somewhat but Dravid
mistimes his attempted pull, dragging it straight down to McMillan
at square leg on the bounce
13.4 Adams to Dravid, no run, shortish and fairly wide outside off
stump, leaves it well alone to the keeper
13.5 Adams to Dravid, no run, fullish, straight ball coming back in to
the right-hander, squeezes it down in close square on the leg

30.1 Oram to Yuvraj Singh, two runs, shortish, straight ball, well

Adams at fine leg, has to give chase from wide mid on

watchfully gets in behind it, defending with a dead bat back on
the off side of the pitch
30.3 Oram to Yuvraj Singh, no run, full outside off stump, sweetly
drives straight down the ground on the off side, but can't get it
past a sliding stop by Vettori across to his left from mid off,
he's had a fair bit of work there today - keeping his
        participation levels up, what with
no chance at all of ever being seen again at the bowling crease

at least in Napier they put on 219 runs in that period, albeit in a

(and/or India's ineptitude, depending on how you look at it), and
has now only bowled 11 overs in 4 matches (along with zip, nadda,
nix, nought, zero in both Tests)
and in two of the three games he actually got to deliver a ball, it
wasn't until India were nine down and many of Fleming's pace-
        bowling options had been exhausted
not a lot of positives on the batting front, obviously, but it all
started rather well, a 38-run stand for the first wicket with
little discomfort, but the injection of Adams into the attack
quashed any hopes of mounting a series total
Yuvraj fought hard with the lower order again, but once more he got
out to a rash stroke that cost them any hope of at least batting
out the overs, at any scoring rate
the weather is still so-so, but at least the potentially bad stuff
has continued to hang off for the time being
the sun shone through a few times, but only for short spells, but
the weather has been largely warm, and this packed (though rather
subdued) crowd have enjoyed proceedings thus far
play is set to resume in around 55 minutes time at 4:15pm local

Match State: Innings Break

the players and umpires make their way back on to the field for the
start of the New Zealand chase
there has been a bit of a cool change here, and the top of the
mountains are covered in cloud now, looks rather ominous
it'll be Stephen Fleming to take first strike to Javagal Srinath
from the Remarkables End, with Nathan Astle at the non-striker's
        end
three slips, third man, point, mid off, mid on, square leg and fine
        leg in place
0.1 Srinath to Fleming, no run, fullish ball on off stump, pushes well
forward, easing it up to mid off in defence
0.2 Srinath to Fleming, three runs, shot! overpitched on the toes,
wonderfully well driven through wide mid on, a long chase out
there for Agarkar, it just pulls up inside the longest boundary on
the field, a wayward return tempts them to looking to run a
        fourth!
0.3 Srinath to Astle, no run, short rising ball just outside off stump,
cuts back off the seam, raises the arms up high to leave alone to
        the keeper
0.4 Srinath to Astle, two runs, Astle nicely off the mark in solid
fashion too, full outside off stump, just leans into it and it
pings off the middle of the bat through vacant cover for an easy
        two
0.5 Srinath to Astle, no run, fuller ball outside off stump, leans
forward and raises the arms up high to leave to the keeper
0.6 Srinath to Astle, no run, fullish and straighter, thrusts the front
pad well forward in defence with bat tucked in behind it,
unconvincing appeal for lbw, struck miles outside the line of off
        stump

it's Zaheer Khan to open the bowling from the Coronet Peak End,
with three slips, third man, point, mid off, mid on, square leg
and fine leg in place, stock standard field for this situation now
1.1 Khan to Fleming, (noball) legbye: one run, oversteps, shortish ball
angling into the body, drops from the thigh pad down in close
square on the leg side, they take a quick single
1.1 Khan to Astle, legbye: one run, fullish ball coming back in to the
right-hander, drops it away off the pad in a very similar place,
        another quick run taken
1.2 Khan to Fleming, no run, fullish, straight ball, props well
forward, pushing it away towards Yuvraj at point
1.3 Khan to Fleming, FOUR, shot! straying down the leg side and Fleming
very neatly tickles it fine of the keeper, races to the boundary
1.4 Khan to Fleming, no run, oooh! Fleming gets a bit too ambitious
early, going for a crunching cover drive with all guns blazing,
but it's a good length ball from Khan and isn't really there for
it, big swing and a miss through to the keeper
1.5 Khan to Fleming, no run, beaten! lovely bowling from Khan, has come
back well here, just a little shorter, angling in then straightens
off the seam just outside off stump, Fleming props forward in
defence, just beats the outside edge of the bat tucked into the
        front pad
1.6 Khan to Fleming, no run, full outside off stump, stretches well
forward, shoulders arms to the keeper

2.1 Srinath to Astle, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, leans
well forward, squirting it off the outside edge along the ground
        to Yuvraj at backward point
2.2 Srinath to Astle, one run, shortish, straight ball, tucks it off
the legs towards vacant midwicket, three fielders converge on it
as the batsmen decide not to risk a second run
2.3 Srinath to Fleming, no run, short lifting ball just outside off
stump, watchfully leaves it alone through to the keeper
2.4 Srinath to Fleming, no run, beaten! excellent ball from Srinath,
back of a length and angling across the left-hander, that one just
goes straight on the angle, Fleming just withdrawing the bat
        inside the line in time
2.5 Srinath to Fleming, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, leans
well forward, shouldering arms through to the keeper
2.6 Srinath to Fleming, no run, very similar again, full outside off

3.1 Khan to Astle, no run, fair length ball just outside off stump,
Astle tries to crunch it through cover point but chops it into the
ground, straight to Yuvraj at point on the bounce
3.2 Khan to Astle, FOUR, shot! a little overpitched outside off stump,
and it's as simple as driving through the line of the ball and it
        races away
3.3 Khan to Astle, two runs, fullish, straighter ball, drives firmly
through wide mid on, past Ganguly who has posted himself
straighter inside the circle, timing carries it away from into the
        deep
3.4 Khan to Astle, three runs, oh dear, fullish ball outside off stump,
Astle just leans on it, timing it straight down the ground on the
off side, Nehra makes an ungainly dive to his right there, too
soon and comes up short, has to get up and dash after it
3.5 Khan to Fleming, three runs, now Fleming joins in similarly, a bit
too straight and is driven through wide mid on, another lengthy
chase for Nehra, just overhauling it inside the rope
3.6 Khan to Astle, three runs, and three threes in a row! all very
similar in nature, Khan overpitching and Astle pushes firmly
through the line, playing it between the bowler and mid on, 15
        from the over

4.2 Srinath to Astle, no run, similar again, on a fullish length just
outside off stump, Astle props forward and lets the middle of the
bat do the rest, sweetly defending it to cover this time
4.3 Srinath to Astle, OUT: Srinath gets his man early this time,
pushing forward at a fractionally shorter ball outside off stump,
doesn't get out to the width of it, nicking straight to Dravid at
first slip who pouches it close to his chest

Khan's stint at the bowling crease lasts just two overs, it's
        Ashish Nehra on to bowl
5.1 Nehra to Sinclair, no run, oh boy! Sinclair gets himself in a real
tangle, almost plays on in ungainly fashion, good length ball
angling across him to off stump first up, hops on the crease to
defend it, ends up squeezing it into his midriff, falls loose and
        just rolls back past
the leg stump, Sinclair didn't realise until it was too late
anyway, had it threatened the stumps
5.2 Nehra to Sinclair, no run, good length ball angling on off stump,
pushes forward with a little uncertainty in defence, squirts it
away off the thick inside edge to square leg

strokes it down the ground between bowler and mid off for an easy

straight ball, rapped on the pads as he tries to work it to leg,

6.6 Srinath to Fleming, one run, short, straight ball, pulls it around

control, just 47 more needed in 35 overs and 9 wickets in hand,
the Indian fielders look defeated and ready to get back to the
changing room as quickly as possible
15.1 Agarkar to Fleming, no run, shortish ball sits up, Fleming tries to
pull but plays through it too soon, gets a front edge that drops
into the deck and through to the keeper
15.2 Agarkar to Fleming, SIX, whoa! digs in a short ball, rises to chest
height and Fleming goes for another pull, gets a huge top edge,
but unlike Mongia in exactly the same manner earlier today, his
flies over fine leg's head and into the crowd
that six also brings up the 50 stand in handy time too
15.3 Agarkar to Fleming, no run, shortish ball on off stump, squeezes it

22.2 Nehra to Styris, no run, beaten! lovely ball from Nehra, quick and

        then be invoked if required
23.1 Srinath to Sinclair, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump,

23.3 Srinath to Styris, one run, fullish, straight ball angling into the

        field
23.4 Srinath to Sinclair, no run, full outside off stump, firmly driven
        straight to Kaif at cover
23.5 Srinath to Sinclair, FOUR, Sinclair decides to break up the growing
monotony, charging down the track, turns it into enough of a half
volley to pick up in the air through straight mid on, not a clean
blow, but struck hard enough to race away
23.6 Srinath to Sinclair, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, steers

24.2 Nehra to Styris, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump, gets in
behind it, defending straight back to the bowler
24.3 Nehra to Styris, no run, fullish ball on off stump, pushes forward
at it, nudging it down in close on the off side of the pitch,
looking for a quick run but it's not on offer
24.4 Nehra to Styris, no run, similar delivery, a little shorter, Styris
warily defends, getting in behind it, playing back to the bowler
24.5 Nehra to Styris, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, tries to
force it through the covers but is too cramped for room, chopped
into the ground to Yuvraj at backward point

Nehra tries a bouncer to finish his spell, but it's too short,
over the batsman's head and over the leaping Patel's head too,

outside off stump, left alone to the keeper, 3 required
25.1 Srinath to Sinclair, no run, quick, short rising ball angling down
the leg side, can't catch up to it, through to the keeper
and we have an invader! a young woman, fairly well clothed, runs on
to the field and brings the biggest cheer of the day ... then two
security guards proceed to tackle her and escort her off the field
25.2 Srinath to Sinclair, one run, full down the leg side, glanced away

25.3 Srinath to Styris, no run, tight ball on off stump, steered

25.4 Srinath to Styris, two runs, slower ball sits up outside off stump,
waits for it to arrive, back cuts behind point, Nehra around from
third man to field in the deep, but not before they can pick up an
easy two and New Zealand have won by 7 wickets
New Zealand wrap up the series with an unprecedented three matches
to spare, quite remarkable, but also a sad indictment on the lack
of competition put up by the Indians
Sinclair ends up with a handy not out to boost his confidence, and
Fleming will be rather happy with his innings today, showed many
more of the silky skills that have been missing recently
Srinath the only bowler of any note for India, again, three wickets
in a hopelessly lost cause but he still fought hard throughout
Nehra had a reasonably fiery burst for a while, but couldn't break
        through
New Zealand keep re-writing their record books, recording their
fastest (chasing) victory over a full ODI nation - winning today
with a mere 146 balls to spare - 7 more than which they had
remaining when they won at Christchurch three days ago
not a lot more can be said about today really, it's just a case of
'same old, same old' and India don't look even remotely like
breaking the shackles, despite the abundant talent lying dormant
        in the squad
if there's any sort of tenuous positive that can be taken from this
result is that with the series now officially lost, India may be
able to relax more, experiment more for the World Cup, as the
results from here on in matter far less, except for pride
no great surprises as Andre Adams is named man of the match for his
5-22, the equal second best bowling figures for New Zealand in
        ODIs
