3rd ODI: New Zealand v India at Christchurch, 1 Jan 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 2pm local time (0100 GMT)

welcome to Jade Stadium in Christchurch for the third One-Day
International of the National Bank Series between New Zealand and
        India
it's a gorgeous day, perfect cricket-watching and playing weather,
a fair breeze blowing across the ground to keep temperatures in
        the comfortable range
the pitch looks a cracker, nice and brown with only a few small
deceiving patches of green - quite traditional here in
Christchurch, has often fooled a touring captain in the past to
choose to bowl first, when in fact the green areas do nothing
whatsoever to aid the bowlers, as was the case the last time India
played here - captain Mohammad Azharuddin sent New Zealand in, and
they proceeded to smack the small matter of 300 runs on their way
to drawing the series in the final match
Sourav Ganguly hasn't made the same mistake this time, wanting to
get things off to a positive start in the first international
match of 2003, and hope India's team can end their losing run of 4
matches in a row, by winning the toss and opting to bat
New Zealand have named an unchanged line-up, with late replacement
Michael Mason not making his debut - simply replacing the
slightly-injured Shane Bond in the drinks-carrying role
for India, the expected return of Sachin Tendulkar has not
materialised, he is being rested for one further match, while the
team sports just one change from that which lost by 35 runs at
Napier, with Ajit Agarkar getting his first run in the series in
place of Ashish Nehra, while Rakesh Patel gets a fraction closer to
getting a run-on job, acting as 12th man today
the players make their way out to the middle in front of a
reasonable, but far from packed crowd, and it'll be Daryl Tuffey
to open up from the Hadlee Stand End
Virender Sehwag will take first strike, with Sourav Ganguly at the
        non-striker's end
three slips, gully, third man, point, mid off, wide mid on and fine
        leg in place
0.1 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, another fine start for Tuffey, right on a
line and length straight away, has Sehwag fishing at it before
withdrawing late just a fraction outside off stump, through to
        keeper McCullum
0.2 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, and again! lovely bowling with extra
bounce from Tuffey, beats Sehwag all ends up, through to the
        keeper again
0.3 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, digs in an attempted bouncer, a little
wayward, heading down the leg side, ducks back out of the way,
lucky not to be called wide
0.4 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, fair length ball but a bit wider outside
off stump, much easier for Sehwag to shoulder arms to leave it
0.5 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, shortish lifting ball on off stump,
squares around a little to defend it firmly down towards point
where Vincent swoops on it, Sehwag at last experiences bat on ball
0.6 Tuffey to Sehwag, one run, shortish, straight ball, hops on the
crease, tucks it down just behind square on the leg side, easy run
on offer with wide open space there, India and Sehwag underway

End of over 1 (1 run) India 1/0 (RR: 1.00)
DR Tuffey 1-0-1-0 - Hadlee Stand End
V Sehwag 1* (6b) SC Ganguly 0* (0b)

Kyle Mills to open the bowling from the Port Hills End
1.1 Mills to Sehwag, no run, good start! fullish in length, just
outside off stump, plays and misses, beaten by a little away
        movement through to the keeper
1.2 Mills to Sehwag, two runs, drops it a touch short and strays to
leg, sits up easily for Sehwag to wristily whip it away through
backward square leg, Tuffey does well to slide around from long
leg to keep it inside the rope
1.3 Mills to Sehwag, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump,
watchfully steers it away towards Vincent at point in defence
1.4 Mills to Sehwag, no run, similar again, squares right around,
solidly getting in behind it, firmly defending into the off side
1.5 Mills to Sehwag, no run, shortish lifting ball just outside off
stump, slashes and misses, beaten by the bounce, a bit tight on
him too, through to the keeper
1.6 Mills to Sehwag, FOUR, shot! a bit full and Sehwag simply stands
and delivers, driving on the up, through vacant cover with this
pseudo-Test match field set, doesn't bother to move an inch after
playing the stroke, classical stuff on a flat wicket

End of over 2 (6 runs) India 7/0 (RR: 3.50)
KD Mills 1-0-6-0 - Port Hills End
SC Ganguly 0* (0b) V Sehwag 7* (12b 1x4)

2.1 Tuffey to Ganguly, no run, fair length ball angling across the
left-hander finally seeing his first delivery, raises the arms up
high to leave through to the keeper
2.2 Tuffey to Ganguly, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, leans
into it, sweetly easing it square on the off side, Vincent across
        quickly from point to field
2.3 Tuffey to Ganguly, no run, good ball! full and well bowled into the
deck, rises up sharply as Ganguly thrusts forward towards it,
beats the groping outside edge through to the keeper
2.4 Tuffey to Ganguly, legbye: one run, fair length ball swinging back
in, rapped high on the pad as it heads down leg, rebounds a fair
distance away behind square leg, stifled shout for lbw from behind
the wicket as a single is ambled
2.5 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, tight shortish lifting ball on off stump,
hops on the crease to firmly defend down towards point

outside off stump, just holds the bat inside the line as it passes

DR Tuffey 2-1-1-0 - Hadlee Stand End

3.1 Mills to Ganguly, one run, tight shortish ball on off stump, dabs
it down just square of Oram in the gully, a little sloppily
fielded as he palms it down, and away from back-up fielder Vincent
from point, quick single taken as a result, Vincent's shy at the
        bowler's end is wide
3.2 Mills to Sehwag, (noball) no run, oversteps, good shortish ball
moving away wider outside off stump, brings a slash and miss by
        Sehwag
3.2 Mills to Sehwag, no run, fair length ball outside off stump, this
time more judiciously leaves it alone through to the keeper
3.3 Mills to Sehwag, no run, full and straight, sweetly and firmly
driven along the ground, straight up to McMillan at mid off
3.4 Mills to Sehwag, no run, beaten! good ball from Mills, full and
seaming away, invites the drive and Sehwag goes for it, plays and
misses, loud but unconvincing shout for caught behind turned down
wisely by umpire Cowie, doesn't stop the crowd showing their
        disappointment after
seeing a replay on the big screen, however, good decision
3.5 Mills to Sehwag, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, strongly
punched square, straight to Vincent at point
3.6 Mills to Sehwag, OUT: but Mills gets him this time! fair length and
rising, moving away wider outside off stump, Sehwag falls back on
the crease, slashing at it but only succeeding in getting a thin
top edge straight through to McCullum

shoulders arms through to the keeper as it angles further away

fielder Vincent who fires it back in
4.5 Tuffey to Laxman, no run, fair length fullish ball moving away
slightly outside off stump, hops across his stumps towards it but

forward, watchfully in behind it, quietly defending up towards
        Hitchcock at mid off
5.2 Mills to Ganguly, no run, dropped! shortish lifting ball angling
away outside off stump, Ganguly fences at it, steering a big edge
towards Fleming's right at first slip, but McCullum ambitiously
dives across to intercept it, failing to glove it cleanly, was
        just angling away
from him enough that it didn't go straight in

VVS Laxman 0* (2b) SC Ganguly 2* (15b)

6.1 Tuffey to Laxman, one run, shortish ball but angling into the body,

stump, Laxman flinches at it, beats the gloves through to the
        keeper, another fine Tuffey over

SC Ganguly 3* (16b) VVS Laxman 1* (7b)

7.1 Mills to Ganguly, no run, beaten! fine seam bowling by this pair,
on the right length, just on or outside off stump and using the
seam of the new ball to good effect, Ganguly pushes at it but
        misses, through to the keeper
7.2 Mills to Ganguly, no run, and again! a corker, Ganguly is helpless
once more, playing and missing to a perfect length ball just
        outside off stump
7.3 Mills to Ganguly, one run, shortish ball just outside off stump,
steers it just wide of second slip along the ground, down to

shoulders arms through to the keeper
7.6 Mills to Laxman, no run, shortish lifting ball on off stump, jumps

KD Mills 4-1-10-1 (2nb) - Port Hills End
SC Ganguly 4* (19b) VVS Laxman 1* (11b)

8.1 Tuffey to Ganguly, no run, Ganguly gets adventurous as India
struggle early on, advances down the track, backing well outside
leg stump, big swish and a miss, well done by the bounce and the
width, ugly stuff from the out-of-form captain
8.2 Tuffey to Ganguly, no run, shortish lifting ball on off stump,
strongly punched straight down to Vincent at point
8.3 Tuffey to Ganguly, no run, great ball! squares Ganguly around on
the crease, the line is perfect, just outside off stump and using
the natural angle away from the left-hander, Ganguly is having all
sorts of trouble here, in what are pretty good batting conditions
8.4 Tuffey to Ganguly, no run, full and straight, watchfully pushes it
up towards McMillan at mid on in defence
8.5 Tuffey to Ganguly, OUT: and it had to come, the bowling is just too
good and Ganguly is done by a sharp rising ball climbing just
outside off stump, inexplicably he just hangs the bat out there
away from his body, allows it to flick the edge straight through
        to the

straighter ball, easing it away towards Vincent once more

little leading edge as he awkwardly defends it from the body,

stifled appeal from behind the wicket

off stump, holds the bat more confidently inside the line, tucked

extras end up being the top scorer on 22, ahead of Dravid's
battling 20, which speaks volumes in itself about India's woeful
        effort today
the pitch certainly provided some assistance, even through to the
halfway mark in the innings, and every now and then, a little
movement later on, but then that had just as much to do with a
great seam-up bowling display as any supposed terrors in the
wicket, and while New Zealand's batsmen haven't exactly been in
glorious form themselves, it would be unlikely to see them
struggle to chase this target like they did in Auckland, when the
        conditions were much more bowler-friendly
India will have to pull out a miraculous effort to even get close
today, and it is hard to see that happening with a team who have
lost their last 4 games in a row to New Zealand and showing very
        little outward signs of confidence

miracles out of the air, Ganguly fails to do so this time, a good
length ball sees a thick edge fly hard and at a good height to his
        left at third slip,
goes through his hands and down to third man for a single
2.3 Srinath to Astle, FOUR, shot! short-arm jab from Astle, short ball
sits up on off stump, pulls it powerfully through vacant midwicket
2.4 Srinath to Astle, no run, oooh! huge appeal for caught behind and
the entire Indian team go up, but umpire de Silva says no, and a
good call it is too, good length rising ball just outside off
stump, Astle's bat brushes the front pad flap, creating the noise,
        but is well beaten
through to the keeper, most of the field are extremely disappoint
and stand around for a few moments, the crowd giving them a bit of
        a razz for doing so
2.5 Srinath to Astle, no run, fair length ball on off stump, defends
firmly up on the leg side of the pitch
2.6 Srinath to Astle, legbye: one run, props forward in defence to
another similar straight ball, taken high on the pad which brings

3.1 Khan to Astle, legbye: one run, full and swinging into the pads,
angling down the leg side, another optimistic shout for lbw by the
bowler, as another quick leg bye is taken, after some initial
hesitation from Astle, pitched outside leg, struck outside leg,
        swinging further down
leg - one of the more 'out there' appeals, albeit a brief one
3.2 Khan to Fleming, no run, quicker, short rising ball outside off
stump, just goes away from Fleming a little, invites a big slash
and a miss, as the batsman fails to get over the top of it,
        through to keeper Dravid
3.3 Khan to Fleming, no run, full and a little wide outside off stump,
leans forward, leaving alone through to the keeper
3.4 Khan to Fleming, no run, good length ball veering back into the
left-hander's legs, squared around in defence, watchfully playing
it up to Agarkar at mid on
3.5 Khan to Fleming, no run, digs it in a little shorter outside off
stump, shoulders arms through to the keeper, awful fumble by
Dravid for a regulation take, moving too far as it came through to
        him, very sloppy keeping
one has to feel for Dravid, he has enough of a burden as a batsman
abroad as it is, he's clearly struggling to put consistent
performances in with the gloves, in a relatively new art for him

4.1 Srinath to Astle, FOUR, thwack! Astle has been enjoying his home
ground of late, playing a rather typical shot of his, the charge
down the track and smack it on the up over mid off's head, rockets
to the boundary to get the crowd going
4.2 Srinath to Astle, FOUR, and again! this time plays a more
Sehwagesque slash over the point, advanced down the wicket just
like the ball before, it seamed back in from a back of a length,
was rather tight on him but still had the power to easily clear
        the infield
4.3 Srinath to Astle, FOUR, and four more! dances down the track
*again* and it's a bit fuller, hits more easily on the up over mid
off's head, a stronger hit than the previous two
4.4 Srinath to Astle, FOUR, four in a row! very smart cricket, has
Srinath rattled, sits back and waits for the shorter ball, and
pulls him through vacant midwicket, cracking stuff, crowd is
        electrified now
4.5 Srinath to Astle, two runs, shorter ball angling down the leg side,
tries to pull it away but only gets a bit of glove on it, but
sufficiently enough to get it wide of Dravid, Khan runs around
from from fine leg to just tip it back inside the rope and they
        settle for two
4.6 Srinath to Astle, FOUR, amazing over! Astle finishes it off in
style, charges and smacks a half volley along the ground through
extra cover, 22 off the over, crowd clap and chant in rhythm,
        great atmosphere now

bit of a hurry up! they want to see more of the Astle-type
        approach!
5.2 Khan to Fleming, no run, shortish ball angling in on off stump,
gets in behind it, solidly defending straight back to the bowler,
crowd give another one of their famed ironic cheers, for Fleming
        middling it
5.3 Khan to Fleming, no run, shortish, quicker ball, seaming back in
sharply, tucks Fleming right up, cops it on the body as he jumps
into it, drops down in close on the leg side
5.4 Khan to Fleming, legbye: one run, full and slanting down the leg
side, turns it down towards Harbhajan at fine leg from the pad,
crowd naturally cheer as their local hero gets back on strike
5.5 Khan to Astle, no run, good ball! that keeps the chanting crowd a
bit quiet, back of a length and straightening on middle stump,
extra bounce tucks Astle up like Fleming before him, and he too
cops it on the body, ball drops at his feet

6.1 Agarkar to Fleming, no run, comes well forward to a good fullish
ball swinging back in, struck high on the pad and brings a loud
shout for lbw mainly from the bowler, but he was well forward and
        probably struck outside the line

very dramatically and late but down the leg side, Fleming can't
catch up to it, but to Dravid's credit, he does very well to
snatch it with his right glove
6.3 Agarkar to Fleming, no run, tight ball on off stump, watchfully
taps it down in close on the off side in defence
6.4 Agarkar to Fleming, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, leans

7.3 Khan to Fleming, no run, good ball! rather similar to many seen
during the Indian innings, rising off an awkward length and just
straightening enough before leaving Fleming late outside off

7.4 Khan to Fleming, OUT: Fleming's attempts to play himself into form
don't work today, very similar ball to the last but the key
difference is the line, a touch straighter, compulses Fleming to

15.2 Bangar to McMillan, no run, full and fairly wide outside off stump,
swinging further away, shoulders arms through to the keeper
15.3 Bangar to McMillan, one run, tight shortish ball on off stump, dabs
it down in close on the off side, again very sharp running by
Vincent to call through for the single before Kaif can get in from
        cover to field it
15.4 Bangar to Vincent, no run, fullish ball angling away outside off
stump, shoulders arms to leave to the keeper
15.5 Bangar to Vincent, one run, fullish, straight ball, leans on it to
turn it away wide of Ganguly at mid on for another simple single
15.6 Bangar to McMillan, FOUR, shot! full on the legs, McMillan picks it
up with ease over midwicket, races away to the boundary, McMillan
        steadily increasing in confidence

tries to clip it away through midwicket but misses, rebounds off
the pad down to Harbhajan at square leg
16.2 Agarkar to Vincent, no run, similar delivery, but this time gets
the middle of the bat on it, turned straight to Harbhajan at
        square leg
16.3 Agarkar to Vincent, two runs, fullish ball outside off stump,
strongly drives through cover, mistimed it somewhat but has enough
gusto to get three-quarters of the way to the boundary before
        being overhauled by two men
16.4 Agarkar to Vincent, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, pushes
forward in defence, firmly playing up to mid off
16.5 Agarkar to Vincent, no run, good length fullish ball swinging away
outside off stump, Vincent has a dabble at it, beaten through to
        the keeper
16.6 Agarkar to Vincent, one run, full on off stump, squeezes it up

Ganguly continues to change his bowlers constantly, with Srinath
returning again, but this time at the Port Hills End in place of
        Bangar
17.1 Srinath to Vincent, no run, shortish ball on off stump, defends
firmly from the crease, playing straight down to Kaif in the
        covers
17.2 Srinath to Vincent, no run, short lifting ball just outside off
stump, stands tall to get over the top of it, tapping it down on
the leg side of the pitch, they briefly look for a quick run but
Srinath is sharply on to it, preventing the run
17.3 Srinath to Vincent, one run, full and straying down the leg side,
helped on its way down to Agarkar at fine leg, they look for a
quick second but it's not on
17.4 Srinath to McMillan, one run, shorter ball angling on leg stump,
turned off the legs down towards Agarkar once more
17.5 Srinath to Vincent, FOUR, shot! not a bad length ball but Vincent
strikes it at the top of its bounce, punching it into the turf,
down through cover point, and with the rather attacking field
employed by Ganguly (no other option but to, of course), means
        there's no cover
sweeper to stop that one going all the way

off stump, happy to let it go untouched through to the keeper

just another 28 runs required, and all of 32 overs in which to get
them, it's a cakewalk now for the home side, and a rather
        unexpected 3-0 series lead awaits
18.1 Agarkar to McMillan, no run, short rising ball outside off stump,
McMillan sways the head back out of the way to let it pass through
        to keeper Dravid
18.2 Agarkar to McMillan, no run, McMillan dangerously thrusts the front
pad out to a fullish ball cutting back in off the seam from
outside off stump, loud shout for lbw turned down by umpire de
Silva, was not coming back in enough
18.3 Agarkar to McMillan, no run, rather full and straight, strongly
driven along the carpet but straight to Khan at mid on
18.4 Agarkar to McMillan, no run, bouncer! angling on leg stump,
McMillan ducks well underneath it to let it pass to the keeper,
Agarkar gets the signal that that's his one allowed for the over
18.5 Agarkar to McMillan, no run, good length rising ball just outside
off stump, shapes away late, McMillan elects to raise the arms up
        high, leaving to the keeper

stump, Vincent tries to slap it through the covers by getting over
the top of it, but plays and misses, through to the keeper
19.2 Srinath to Vincent, no run, Srinath keeps hanging out the washing
on the line well outside off stump, tempting Vincent again, this
one's a little fuller, the batsman more wisely chooses to let it
go through to the keeper, though
19.3 Srinath to Vincent, no run, beaten! lovely ball, good length and
cutting back in off the seam, through the gap between bat and
body, over the stumps through to the keeper
19.4 Srinath to Vincent, no run, oh dear, Vincent tries the Astle
tactic, charging down the track, but it doesn't work, Srinath just
holds on to it on a short enough length to prevent him being able
to get to it, swing and a miss through to the keeper
19.5 Srinath to Vincent, no run, shortish ball outside off stump, seams
back slightly a little late, but never enough to threaten as

26.5 Agarkar to Oram, FOUR, and there it is, short rising ball angling

doing so steers it down wide of the slips, and too fast and fine
for third man to cut off, and New Zealand are victors by 5 wickets
        with a
whopping 23.1 overs to spare, to take an imposing 3-0 lead in this
National Bank One-Day International Series - meaning India have
the rather difficult task of winning 4 in a row to take the series
        from here
though New Zealand didn't quite finish it off in the style they
might have liked, the end result is nonetheless a rather
commanding performance, never letting the foot off the throat of
        the Indians in the field
the pace bowling trio of Tuffey, Mills and Oram giving very little
away with impeccable line and length (and bounce) bowling on these
        home surfaces
Hitchcock ended up with the best return statistically, though he
was perhaps the weakest of the bowlers today, benefiting from one
poor umpiring decision for his first wicket, and wayward
        strokeplay thereafter
Astle's cameo knock at the beginning of the chase helped New
Zealand avoid a nervous reply like that in Auckland, though none
of the batsmen looked entirely convincing as they knocked off the
runs - still plenty of work to be done!
the bowlers toiled manfully, but can't realistically be expected to
defend such totals every match, but credit to Srinath (though
expensive in the end, thanks to that explosive 22-run over off the
blade of Astle), Khan and Agarkar for continuing to plug
away until the very end, when it could've been so much easier to
just give up on the game at the halfway point and look ahead to
        the future
now that it is out of the way, that is precisely what India must
do, even if it is not to win the series now (though of course, the
slim possibility always remains), but to get their batsmen moving
their feet, finding confidence at the crease, and
working out their best combinations ahead of the World Cup looming
ever-closer in South Africa next month
the New Zealanders too are looking towards the World Cup, but in
the short term are looking only to 10am tomorrow, when the final
15 are named for the tournament, and in particular, the all-
rounders will the most nervous ones
competition is fierce, while some players will consider themselves
fortunate to be there - some likely to be picked on experience
rather than form, and expect some changes for the side picked for
the remaining matches in the series, based on tomorrow's
       naming
Daryl Tuffey is named Man of the Match for his fine economical
