Kenya in England, Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands 2008

Ouma fined for showing dissent

Cricinfo staff

August 25, 2008

Kenyan wicketkeeper Maurice Ouma has been found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the first of three ODIs against Ireland at Stormont in Belfast on Sunday. He was reprimanded by match referee Mike Procter for showing dissent in a hearing that took place after the match.

Ouma was found to have breached clause 1.2 of the Code which relates to the "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings". The charge was brought by umpires Peter Hartley and Ian Ramage, who were present at the hearing by along with the player, third umpire Alan Neill, Kenya manager Davinder Singh and captain Steve Tikolo.

The incident took place in the 26th over of the Kenyan innings when Ouma slapped his bat against his pad and then kicked the bat a few metres as he walked towards the pavilion, after being declared out caught and bowled.

Ouma, who scored 25 in Kenya's 33-run defeat, pleaded guilty in the hearing.

All Level 1 offences carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50% of a player's match fee. In such cases, the match referee's decision is final and a player does not have a right of appeal.

The second match of the series will be played on Monday.
